Andy and Katie are trying to keep it short this week, but they are so amused by "the little dark twisted one," that they had to keep going on and on (like usual). Max should have his own spin-off, but who would watch it? Jodi reacts negatively to Bette's type A personality, but Katie likes her just the way she is.

Katie was right about levels of deafness (it is a bit rude to use the term "hearing impaired"). There are those who are completely incapable of hearing, and there are those who are HOH (Hard of Hearing). They are included in the same group, but those who are HOH sometimes can wear hearing aids or implants to increase their hearing capabilities.
Marlee Matlin herself has 20% of hearing in her left ear (the same ear Jodi had the hearing aid on), and none on the other. It is very probable that the writers decided to incorporate this into the Jodi character.
The thing is that, on the scene you referenced in Lesson Number One, where Bette (aka La Diosa) whispers into Jodi's ear "I think I could fall in love with you", she whispers into Jodi's right ear. It would have been impossible for Jodi to hear her.
I was on a chat with Marlee Matlin not too long ago, and she explained that the way she had understood this scene was that Jodi had picked up on what Bette had said when she looked at Bette's expression on her face and her eyes. She said that it was because they shared an emotional connection that goes beyond the surface. It sounds like bs, but it was a very sweet answer from Ms. Matlin.
